Kalamunda is a town and residential suburb located 25 kilometres east of Perth`s central business district, in the local government area of the City of Kalamunda. The suburb is found in the Darling Scarp at the eastern limits of metropolitan Perth. Greenmount State Forest is found to the east of Kalamunda, as well as Mundaring State Forest and Helena National Park. Kalamunda is situated between Gooseberry Hill to the north and Lesmurdie to the south.
The original inhabitants of the area that makes up Kalamunda today were the Noongar people. Following European settlement, a property named Headingly Hill was established in the suburb in 1881. The home, Stirk Cottage, is now a museum. The Kalamunda Zig Zag railway operated from 1891 to 1949. The suburb was gazetted as Kalamunda in 1901. The name Kalamunda is derived from the Noongar language, with cala meaning "fire", "home", "district", or "settlement" and mun-da meaning "forest" or "bush".
Kalamunda National Park is located to the east of the suburb. Kalamunda`s main retail precinct is situated in the suburb`s northeast, adjacent to Hedley Jorgensen Park. Kalamunda History Village and Kalamunda Water Park are found nearby in the suburb`s east.
